About StreamChoice Lab
About us and how we check
We check devices sold direct to consumers. We work outwards from what the seller actually publishes — the specification, the checkout and the terms — and we are clear about what we could not establish and about how we make money.
Our method
A check on this site always follows the same five steps, in this order:
- We read the sales page and record its claims verbatim. Where a claim is central to the offer we quote it rather than paraphrase it, so a reader can judge the wording themselves.
- We look for a published specification and print what we find. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, we say so item by item rather than filling the gap with plausible-sounding numbers.
- We open the checkout and record every price, fee and payment method, including the option preselected by default and the final total shown before payment.
- We read the terms in full — the refund clause, the shipping clause and the dispute clause — and we flag any difference between what the advertising promises and what the contract states.
- We search independent platforms for a rating. We publish the verifiable public figure even when it is low. Where no independent source exists, we say that instead of quoting the seller’s own number.
What we do not do
We do not invent ratings or review counts. We do not repeat a seller’s customer numbers as though they were verified. We do not reproduce testimonials as evidence. We do not name a manufacturer or a chipset we have not seen documented, even when a photograph strongly suggests one. And we neither buy nor sell reviews.
When we have not tested a device
Most of what we publish is a documentary check rather than a hands-on test, and we say which is which at the top of every page. Where we have not held a device, nothing in the text describes its performance, picture quality or reliability, because we have not measured them. This is a real limitation and we would rather state it than imply otherwise. Where we do obtain a unit, we publish what we find and date the update.
How we make money
Through affiliate links. When we suggest checking a price at a seller’s own checkout, that link is labelled as an affiliate link and may earn us a commission if you buy. The price you pay is exactly the same as if you had reached the checkout on your own.
What this does not change: we do not accept payment from sellers to publish, to soften criticism or to raise a rating. No brand checked has seen a text before publication. You can verify this from the checks themselves: we print empty specification tables, we state when an advertised claim cannot be true, and we decline to publish a score when no independent source exists.
Corrections
Prices, terms and product pages change without notice. Every check carries the date its sources were last examined. If you spot an outdated figure or an error, write to us and we will correct it, noting the date of the correction. Sellers are welcome to send documentation — a specification sheet or a written return policy — and we will publish it with attribution.
